Drivers have to appear for an oral test to get a learners licence which is valid for 6 months. Drivers then have to pass a driving test to get the driver's licence. In many states of India, a learner's licence is granted after passing a written test and then if one passes the practical test, one receives a permanent licence. In some states drivers have to attempt an Multiple Choice Question exam to receive a learner's licence. A learners licence enables one to drive a car(LMV) or ride a bike(MCWG- Motor cycle with gear) as long someone with a permanent licence is present in the same vehicle.
The presence of another with a permanent licence is not needed in the case of MCWOG (Motor cycle without gear). This licence holder can drive mopeds, scooters and other motorcycles which do not have gear.
