Is a police officer has a power to punish the accused legally if not y in india this practice is going on

no police officer is not empowered to punish at all and in india it's going on because of lack of awareness in public or we can say ignorance of law among general public is the responsible

Punishment can be imposed by Court of Law on being held guilty of charge(s)  but not the police.

What is more punishment in a society, than being arrested by a police person for interrogation?  Physical injuries are nothing before mental agony created by them as many consider reputation as their asset in society.
