A Delhi court Thursday allowed a suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist, who is accused in the 2008 Delhi serial blasts, to contest the upcoming civic body polls in the national capital.
Judge Narinder Kumar allowed application of Zia-ur-Rehman to file his nomination for the April 15 elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
The court allowed Rehman to file his nomination through a jail official in Ahmedabad where he is presently lodged. He wants to contest the polls from ward number 205 of Zakir Nagar in New Delhi.
Rehman’s counsel M.S. Khan moved an application Wednesday seeking permission to file the nomination.
Khan requested the court that the “only prayer in the application for forwarding of the nomination of the applicant to the concerned returning officer through superintendent jail and that the applicant does not want to himself go to the office of the returning officer for this purpose.”
The court however expressed its concern over rejection of Rehman’s application in case of non-compliance with proper procedure for filing of nomination. The Delhi Police also did not oppose Rehman’s application.
Rehman with 12 others suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives is facing trial in the Delhi serial blasts in September 2008, which killed 26 people and injured 135.
