Mandatory to cross examined a witness mentioned in 306 CrPc?

Is it mandatory to cross examined a witness as mentioned in Secrtion 306 (4) of the Criminal procedure Code?

it depends of nature of offence.

 

if the offence is triable by sessions court, then accused would not have right of cross examination as it was not trial. but if the offence is triable by magistrate then approver can be cross examined.
