Time period of keeping insurance records by the companies

My query is that Insurance of private motor vehicle was done in 2006 and insurance company confirms by email / online during the year 2011 that the record of the same is available with their branch insurance. After receiving the court notice during the year 2012 the insurance companies denied that the said cover note does not belong to them nor they have any record, whereas the same was confirmed by the company via email / online that the said cover note belongs to them and policy for the same is also issued.

Kindly confirm that what is the time period for the insurance companies to keep record of such cover note / policies under the rules of I.R.D.A. (Insurance Regulatory Authority of India).  Where can I get such notifications of record keeping of cover note / polices although I have verbally known that Insurance Companies are liable to keep record of cover note insurance polices upto 10 years.  Please advice suitably.
