During the life time of wife, a Muslim can not marry his wife's own sister, as it is prohibited by Quran. Such marriage is void and illegal as per Islamic Shariath.

"Is the marriage valid?"
A marriage with sister of wife during is a marriage by "unlawful conjunction"
Mulla himself on this topic has stated that"A man may not have at the same time two wives who are so related to each other by consanguinity, affinity or fosterage, that if either of them had been a male, they could not have lawfully intermarried,as for instance, two sisters,or aunt and niece. The bar of unlawful conjunction renders a marriage irregular, not void."

It is said to be irregular but not void because he can regularize it by divorcing the former.

So marriages
a]contacted without witness,or
b]with a fifth one,or
c]with one undergoing IDDAT,or
d]with a different religion,or
e]prohibited by unlawful conjunction
are irregular and not void.
