Dear Mr. Vijayaraghavan,
Had you explained the real problem, its background and the purpose of asking that could have been better to get appropriate solution to your problem or confusions, as the case may be.
However, I hope, as a CFO you can well realise the importance and value of appointment letter and/or the agreement entered in to by the CEO.
Remuneation of which post a CEO is drawing is not important, but what are conditions attached to his appointment and responsibilities assigned or delegations made to him as a CEO are the important factors.
The first President of India, Hon. Shri Rajendra Prasad, used to draw Re.1/- as remuneration for a considerable period during his tenure as President of India, but did not lose his status as a President of the democratic India.
So, you may better refer the relevant documents pertaining to his appointment, whether made as a CEO or as a consultant.

You are still far away from the real problem. legal implications are made on case to case or problem to problem basis.
However, if he is assigned to do specific job, he can sign the document concerning his duties and responsibilities.
