Dear Sir,
I reside in Kolkata, West Bengal. 3 years back I was caught by cops while drinking in public place. They arrested me and then after putting me behind bars for 3 hours somebody unknown to me came and asked me to sign the bail papers and vakalatnama. He also took my fingerprints on several pages.
I was asked to hand over Rs.400. He said he would deposit that fine tomorrow on behalf of me to the court and resolve that case.
He also told me that I was booked under IPC 290.
Recently I'm selected in WBCS. Now the verification is going to start.
I'm reading everywhere that mere fine means conviction. And I was arrested then unknowingly I paid the fine and eventually got convicted in the court of law.
So is there any chance for me getting the appointment letter?
Or, during police verification when this will come up they will cancel my appointment. Mere fine can lead to such a scenario where I become a convict and I can no longer get a job in govt organizations?
I'm in deep depression.
Kindly suggest me.

I am a complete teetotaler. And I don't have any case, never became a part of any legal trouble except this one issue. But how does that matter to govt? When they see i already had a case in my past will they deny me joining?
But I was arrested and was subsequently released after paying the fine. I didn't even go to the court.
Please tell me will they deny me joining?

Not able to agree with Mr Usha Kapoor. If the case is pending his being teetotaler now is not of any consequence.

Expert Mr. Rajendra K Goyal is right.
Are you the same person!
Information thru RTI is not that difficult.
You must be having dates.
Munshi in Thana can check the entire record.
RTI cell employees can get you details under RTI.
Avoid even such minor indiscretions in public life.

I have gone through the thread you have posted in reference to our discussion in detail.
Sorry I do not know that gentleman (Arnan Chatterjee).
But the case sounds pretty similar to me because exactly the same things happened with me. It's all same - I was also treated the same way as he was. But he didn't know whether he was convicted or not, but in my case I know I was. The lawyer (in PS) told me that they haved booked me under section 290 IPC and he also told me that if I want the document I could collect it from him the next day.
I had no idea about law then. I thought mere fine could not lead me to any future problem and even he had confirmed me that. So I never felt like collecting it.
He also told me that day that it was a mere "petty case". I asked him specifically about my candidature getting rejected in my future prospective jobs and he had confirmed me that "no way".
But now when I have actually got an opportunity in my hand I came to know that conviction may be troublesome for getting a job however smaller it may be.
I would like to share one interesting but eye catching fact - I have found quite similar threads may be 3-4 other in this forum and they are quite old. And in every instance the policemen behave the same way as they behaved in case of me or Mr. Arnab. Is this how policemen tackle such issues in WB? God knows!
Now what I have understood from your guidance that I should file an RTI and request the local police to let me know if any case has ever been lodged against my name. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
By the way neither I remember the exact date nor I have the no or the name of that concerned lawyer who I met in PS that day. I guess RTI will throw some light.
And I can assure you I'm not the person you referring to, I don't even know a person with such a name.
