Standard chartered Bank issued me a credit card well back on 1994, in my official address at Mumbai. I canceled the card on Sep-1995, after settling the account. I changed my job location to Ahmadabad on Apr-1996. I been transferred back to Mumbai again on 1998. I took an overseas appointment on 2003 and since then I am a NRI. I came on a month's leave on Jan-12 this year. Due to my different relocation, I lost the card surrender letter, moreover which is a matter of 16 years old. Even I could not remember the card no etc.
Since closure of the card I have not received any communication from SCB. Surprisingly I received a call on last Monday, from a lawyer, appointed by Shaha Finlease Pvt. Limited, claiming that I have am unsettled due of 4 lacs rupees. He has threatening me to book a case in HC and apply to cancel my visa. I wrote an email to customer care of SCB and Shaha Finlease pvt. limited for the details. SCB replied to contact Shaha Finlesae Pvt. Limited. I am totally confused.
Can you guide me what to do????????

Lodge a complaint to the Banking Ombudsman and file a suit for Declaration and Injunction at the jurisdiction in Civil Court where the Bank is situated.

First of all ask the caller to furnish an itemised detailed credit card statement which shows debit items against you and check the correctness and the period to which that pertains.

You will need to obtain a statement which shows the details for 4Lacs balance on your card account to understand how the amount has reached 4 lacs when you had already settled the dues.
Normally on unpaid amounts banks charges approx 36 percent per annum so the amount keeps on increasing.

You have done a mistake of not obtaining the pre closure letter from the bank, after settling the dues.Have you given a letter of cancellation of the card to the bank.? If so you would have received a settlement letter to your address. Now that after 16 years they are harassing means it is nothing but foul play by some unscrouplus elements.Immediately lodge a complaint with the nearest police station and also give a complaint to the Banking Ombudsman stating all the facts. In case any body comes to you in the guise of a lawyer or a collection executive, demand for an authantic ID card, issued by the competent authority. you can also file a civil suit against the bank.Kindly consult a lawyer at your place and then proceed

Cause to send a lawyer notice, through a lawyer of your area, who is conversant with the subject matter, to the bank and also the recovery agency. If the harrassment repeated file police complaint against the bank officials and also the recovery agents. Also sent a complaint to RBI to stop such illegal proceedings.
