cross examinatoin

a person in chief examination in court said that there were 4 person present on the spot after that in cross he said there were 3 person .
on asking that why he tell name of 4 persons in his chief and also in 161 crpc, he did not give any reasons .
1 what are the legal action can be taken against that public witness ?
2 how accused of the case get benifit/

the accused would be able to get benefit out of this confrontation in statement. Besides it what further damage could be done to the witness can only be assessed after further grilling on this issue.
