Cross Examination

I am a junier advocate. I want to know--
What is the cross examination and what is the purpose of cross examination?

The examination of a witness by the adverse party shall be called his cross-examination (Section 137 of Indian Evidence Act).

The purpose of cross examination is to bring out the relevant facts.

Cross Examination : S. 137 of the Indian evidence Act provides that the examination of a witness by the adverse party shall be called his cross-examination.
Purpose of Cross Examination : The purpose of cross-examination is to expose the truth about the testimony of the witness.
