Can an Advocate be an independent director of a company? Is he required to take prior permission from Bar Council of India?

An advocate can be director, independent director,partner but not managing director.

No need of any permission it is in the law and rules framed under Advocates act.

Yes, so long he is not involved into day to day activities of the company, and is not incharge of affairs of the company which is not into legal profession he can be director on board of any company and is entitled to only sitting fee and nothing like remunerations by whatever name called.
