(Querist) 26 September 2011 This query is : Resolved
Dear Sir,

Could you please tell me what is the meaning of sic in below Statement?

However, a departmental proceesing was initiated against him on the ground that he remained absent unauthorizedly from 05.03.2006 ( sic ) to 04.03.2006 & on some other grounds.

A misspelled or incorrect word in a quotation followed by "[sic]" indicates that the error appeared in the original source.

R.Ramachandran (Expert) 26 September 2011
It only means that the word or numbers etc., preceding the (sic) seems to be wrongly spelled or not accurate, but has been quoted accurately, as appearing in the original.

Dear Prashant,

The word "sic" inserted within brackets in a text means to vouch for a word/ spelling/ date being exactly as in the original.

But, so far as disciplinary action is concerned on the charge for unauthorised absence from 05.03.2006 to 04.03.2006, that itself would prove to be null & void and the chargesheet as quite invalid, as the date or time can never happen in the sequence from of future to present or past.

The rules for framing charge sheet for departmental inquiry clearly specify that the charge should be clear, definite, perfect and unambiguous.

sic indicates the passage appears exactly as in the original source. The usual purpose is to inform readers that any errors or apparent errors in the copied material are not from transcription—that they are reproduced exactly from the original writer or printer.

sic 1 (sk)
adv.
Thus; so. Used to indicate that a quoted passage, especially one containing an error or unconventional spelling, has been retained in its original form or written intentionally.
