you can take action civil and criminal action both.

please remember that Indian criminal history proves that defamation case is most difficult to win.
Of course,solitary exceptions are there but rule is as detailed above.

ON facts and evidence, it can be filed as a private complaint case.

Effectiveness depends on truth and facts of the case.
