my grand parents have been living in a house in Mumbai for over 55 years , when they began staying in the house , they got the house under the "pagdi system" , till date they pay rent to the land lords.
my query is that because they have stayed in this house for this long , doesn't it become their own , and if possible how do get the ownership transferred on to their name
also taking into account that all the government documents like passport and ration card have been under that address

There is no scope to become the owner of house. If the owner want to sell, your grand parents may be prefered to purchase the house. If your grand parents want to vacate the house , they can receive fresh pagdi amount from the propective tenant.

Agreed to the experts. Once you admit that you took the premise on rent and paying rent, you can never become owner. Your own statement estops you.
