Registration of marriage

can somebody explain me in which states india reg of marrig r compulsory to be regd.

earlier it was not compulsory, but now it has been notified to get all the marriages registered...mere non registration will not render the marriage invalid, but will create problems in other purposes.

It is compulsory in all states however, the same is not being adhered and otherwise also the marriages solemnized under personal laws by rites and customs are considered legal marriage, as there is no penalty for non-registration of marriage.

Also most of the institutions don't ask for marriage certificate hence people have no incentive to get it compulsorily registered.
