Bmc tax on rental office premises

(Querist) 07 January 2013 This query is : Resolved
Dear Sirs,

I have a ownership office premises in mumbai and has been given on Leave and License during 2006 till now. I was not paying any tax to BMC for the rent received by me. Now I have received a notice from BMC demanding a tax on rent with penalty which is equivalent to 50% of the total rent received by me. Am I liable to pay such tax? what could be the consequences if I avoid to pay the same? Is there any alternative available to me. A copy of Leave and License agreement has been lying with BMC.

Please reply.

Thanks.
