what does G.R. stand for? "In a G.R. case instituted on the basis of a First Information Report of the defacto-complainant proceeded as a State case the onus is upon the State or investigating agency to collect all the necessary evidence and materials to prove its case, and it is not for the defacto-complainant to procure evidence and materials for proving of the case, and in a State conducted case the defacto- complainant is a mere witness for the prosecution, inasmuch as in a G.R. case the State is the prosecutor. It may also be difficult for the defacto-complainant in a G.R.case to produce medical papers from the hospital where he or she is treated as a patient being referred by the police station."

I beg your pardon Prabhakar sir.. i have been taught that there is no shame in learning and asking questions. may be this question is not an important one but it was never my intention to waste anyone's time here. i post questions only after exhausting all other ways of knowing the answer.

Well Dear shumaila!
It is always good to be INQUISITIVE to gain knowledge so i would not dispute your comments.
But acronyms are not so universally found in standard form and now a days there is growing practice to acronym any word so unless reference is available it is hard to even guess by any I.Q.
Looking upon the reference disclosed by you
by I.Q.i guess it to stand for General Register of Police which in several other jurisdictions is called General Diary.
A search in police regulations of west bengal in this regard may be an answer to my guess as wrong or correct.

And you need not take any pain for that even as i have finally found it be there where i guessed it must be and that is found in Rule 117 of chapter XI of the Police Regulations of the west bengal headed as "117. Magistrate's General Register of Cases, P. R. B. Form No. 195 30 "
Then it is clear it is maintained by the Magistrate and not by police.
So was the reference you read in judgement G.R.Case=
"General Register of Cases"

yours is a general register case, may be by police invariably during british ruling days police used to maintain general diary on cases, FIRs also are registered under same diary but segregated..other issues normally referred to police station in maintained in a general register of cases. so probably GR surfaced. so they give GR No. FIR No.and the like ...Ms Shumallaji

Always easy it is to go to the relevant police station and find out what their GR means...
GR might mean general rules, so better approach the origin of a document pls
