For a property to be treated as "ancestral", the same ought to have been inherited by a male member in the family from his father or grand father or great grand father PRIOR TO THE COMING INTO FORCE OF HINDU SUCCESSION ACT, 1956.
Once it has acquired the 'ancestral character' it will continue to retain the character in the hands of the person qua his children.
If the property had not acquired the ancestral character as stated above, then it can never acquire the character after HSA 1956 and will remain a separate/private property.
