Can pio give reply in other language

(Querist) 26 April 2014 This query is : Resolved
I am residing in Tamil nadu. I have sought certain information under RTI act to KSRTC, TRivandram ., in a prescribed format in English only. But KSRTC, TRivandram (Public information officer ) had given me reply in Malayalam.

My question is

1) I do not know Malayalam. Wat remedy available to me under the provisions of RTI ?
2) Whether the reply given by KSRTC, TRivandram in Malayalam language to a query received from Tamil nadu is correct? If so under what provision of RTI ?

Pls guide me accordingly.

If English is not the official language of KSRTC, the PIO is not bound to reply in English. You may get the document translated in English or Tamil from some recognised translation agency.

Get the reply translated if PIO has replied in official language of KSRTC.

Many of the state PIOs reply in their regional languages. Some of the state PIOs accepting the request to send the reply in English and replying in English.

In future you may send a special request to the PIO, to reply in English just because of the reason you dont know the regional language.

Yes, as advised you may go for translation of the same to your language for taking up the issue any further.

if you ask in Hindi to central govt they are bound to reply in Hindi. but for query in English one is not bound to reply in English.

Similarly Malayalam is state language of Kerala and the replied in Malayalam. Perfectly OK.
