can a termination letter be send on back date?

Sir/ Madam,
One of my friend working in a pharrma company. on 12/6/2013 he has received a letter from one of his manager that was written on 3/6/2013 , the matter was "your services are terminated w.e.f 17/5/2013" now the question is :
Is it feasible to terminate the services in the back date when my friend has done the working on all these days?.
can anybody from the hierarchy send a termination letter while on the appointment letter director of the company has signed ? Kindly guide.

how many year he has working the company ?
when he was appointed that appointment letter mentioned the terms and condition of joining of the duty and termination of the duty procedure, so you follow the rules if violate the conditions than issue a legal notice to them

First find out as to whether the person who issued termination letter is authorised to issue such letter. Better consult a lawyer practicing in labour law on behalf of employees.

Such termination is bad in the eyes of law but until a lawyer go through the entire facts, no concrete opinion can be given and you can not initiate any legal action just on this comment.
