The principal amount invested in NHAI bonds u/S 54EC on maturity I.e after lock in period of 3 years, is exempt from tax. and you can utilise the amount as you wish to do so. However, interest which will accrue on this investment and paid to you annually, is taxable as your interest income. The interest rate is 6% pa and you have no option to withdraw the principal amount before maturity.
