life imprisonment role of section 57 of ipc

Sir
regarding life imprisonment, some point is not clear, section 57 ipc says it should be taken as 20 years for calculating fractions, what do we mean by this , how it is used by judicial process, practcally.kindly clarify so that it may be made clear to layman
