Now the other party sues him saying that he has not followed a valid method of cancelling a contract on time and due to this act of X the other party has suffered some losses in his business.

Receipt of the document in the office of the affected party in time and the losses incurred to such party after execution of the contract are two separate issues. One shall have to go in depth about the actual losses and the procedure leading to cancellation so the objections of the affected party cannot be ignored/set aside altogether.
