that is written in the judgment what will be counted
Arvind Singh Chauhan (Expert) 04 June 2011
It means imprisonment up to death. But govt. can commute it after 14 years after considering the age, illness, and behavior of convicted person. It is done on special occasion as 15 august etc.

In Gopal Godse vs. Union of India (Gandhi assassination case), the Supreme Court said that life sentence means imprisonment "for the remainder of the natural life of a person"i.e., till his death. The President by power of pardon under the Constitution, or the Government under CrPC have the power te commute (alter) the sentence to imprisonment for a term, or remit (reduce by giving discounts)on the basis of good behaviour or on special occasions like Gandhi Jayanthi and Independence Day etc. Under IPC, for compuation of fractions of life sentence, it is calculated as 20 years.
Pawan Jangid (Expert) 05 June 2011
Agree with Dr. Rao... Life imprisonment ideally means till death. Judiciary only adjudicate the matter and after the judgement is passed, it has no role in the matter.... it is upto the appropriate govt to decide for what period, subject is to be kept behind bars. Moreover, the term precribed in IPC (20 years) is only for computation of fractions.
