a person's name in the matric certificate and PAN card consisits only of the first name and not the surname. the employer insists on using "surname" and releases salary slips and form 16 with surname on them.
how the income tax return is to be filed?

First Option: Request your employer to issue salary certificate and form 16 in the name as appears in the PAN card.

Second Option: make a delclaration to the NSDL/IT Department for rectification of name in the PAN Card. You may be required to publish the said change in government gazette and to give an affidavit to that effect.

It is advised to follow the second option as suggested by Deepak as it shall go a long way.

If the PAN is O.K. nothing has to be done.
