Practice aided by theoretical knowledge makes a man perfect. You need to study some guide books on the requisite topics by some standard authors and refer the relevant sections of the concerned section of the related Acts after reading of each guide point to understand the legal complexity of the concerned sections of the Act. Such guide books can be had only from law book sellers at some selected cities, like Jallandhar, Ambala, Chandigarh or Ludhiana in yours as well adjoining states. Delhi can be the nearest hub to your state to buy most of the guides or law book publications.
The most appropriate action on your part would be to get associated with some Tax Practioner CA or Lawyer for at least 2 years to understand the nitty gritty of the taxation cases.

Handling Tax Matters of a Client requires confidence and knowledge of the subject. A little negligence on the part of a Professional may cause severe damanges to the client financially. In case you feel you are confident enough and have acquired required knowledge, you can apply for grant of ITP Certificate u/s 288 of the IT Act. For the Purpose, you may make an application to CIT of the Area of jurisdiction where you want to practice alongwith copy of your degree and evidence of you having appeared before any income tax officer. On being satisfied, CIT may issue a Certificate to practice. No certificate is however requried to practice before VAT authorities.

Tax practice is largely governed by Jugaadniti...so I always avoided tax-law practice.
better for you to join some good tax lawyer to know the complexities and certainly you need to sharpen your skills on jugadniti...
