Life imprisionment literally mean imprisionment for remaining life but section 57 of Indian Penal Code 1860 laid down that "In calculatuing fraction of terms of punishment imprisionment for life shall be reckoned as equivalent to imprisionment for TWENTY YEARS. And section 55 of Indian Penal Code 1860 empowers the appropriate government to commute the sentence of imprisionment for life to imprisionment of either description for a term not exceeding FOURTEEN YEARS.

Mr.Naresh had given a very good clarification. Yet it is not mandatory to release the life convict after 14 years or 20 years.

Previously 20 years with remission it will be reduced to 14 years. But in the recent developments LI became for whole life. Really it is very good development.
