Life imprisonment... number of years ?

Dear Experts,

What is mean by Punishment of Life Imprisonment doest it mean upto death the person will be behind bars?

Life imprisonment means imprisonment for remaining life.

However,Section 57 of IPC says that "In calculating fraction of terms of punishment imprisonment for life shall be reckoned as equivalent to imprisonment for TWENTY YEARS. And section 55 of IPC empowers the appropriate government to commute the sentence of imprisonment for life to imprisonment of either description for a term not exceeding FOURTEEN YEARS.

Yes, strictly speaking it is imprisonment upto life.

the term ‘life imprisonment’ does not normally mean that the offender will stay in prison for the whole of his natural life.

That means state has power to reduce the sentence for 14 years.

The state has power to relase the convict at any time after 14 years.
