Medical and health checkup expenses in 80d of itr2

(Querist) 08 November 2020 This query is : Resolved
My parents are both senior citizens and I haven't bought any medical insurance for them but I spends a good amount every year for their medical expenses and health check-ups. These expenses are however not hospital bills or hospitalisation expenses. These include regular medicines bought from Pharmacy and normal lab-test like blood-test, X-ray etc done every year. My question is - Can I still show these expenses under "Medical Expenses" and "Preventive Health Checkup" sections of Schedule 80D, even though they are not hospital bills or hospitalisation expenses? Thanks for your advise in advance.

Consult a local chartered accountant or lawyer practicing taxation, if you are not satisfied with the expert advise of Mr. Kavksatayanarayanan, which otherwise, I fully agree.

You should keep proper record of expenditure, cash payments on expenditure may not qualify.
Following extract from the above referred reference from expert kavksatyanarayana are important:

Medical expenditure is not defined anywhere in the Act, but going by the motive, medical expenditure should cover every medical expense whether or not these expenditure are covered under any health insurance policy. Therefore, you can say that expenses such as consultation fees, medicines, hearing aids and so on can be claimed as deduction."

To establish the proof of medical expenses, one must keep the doctor's prescription along with the copy of invoices/receipts of the consultation fees, diagnostic tests, medicine bills etc. would be required."
