No change in wife's surname post marriage.

(Querist) 22 August 2018 This query is : Resolved
Respected Sir/Madam,
I am residing in Pune and I am planning to get my marriage certificate done. In the due course of getting that I got to know that though my wife is not inclined to change her surname but owing to the location and the rules laid down by the Magistrate she has to change her surname. But, I do not want my wife to change it as there are a lot of hassles in changing the surname in all the legal documents like passport, aadhar card, etc.
Can anyone please provide a clarification on this and how can I have it the way I am asking for?

Thanks in advance

Name is provided by the parents when the person was just a child. No external authority has the right to change the name of the person.

However under what authority the magistrate is asking your wife to change her surname is not evident from the query.

I endorse the opinion and advise of expert Mr. K Rajasekharan.
No one can compel to change suffix of name for anyone, it is the decision of the individual concerned to continue his/her maiden name/surname or change.

Mr.K Rajasekharan Sir and Dr J C Vashista Sir,
The registering authority is saying so. This is what has been conveyed to me by the person who is filing for marriage registration on my behalf. Though, I had been insisting on the same for quite sometime I think the middleman is quite adamant in doing it his way or it maybe the authority. Either way I will relinquish his services and try someone else's services.
Thank you for your advice.

Regards

lady has a right to change surname on marriage but has no obligation that she must change.
