No, registration of will is not compulsory. it is optional. However it is always better to get it registered just to avoid future complications. A will can be registered in office of Sub Registrar/Registrar of any city irrespective of fact as to whether property situates in city or not.

Tripathi is right.
registration of a will is not mandatory as per law. But, it is advisable to have it registered to avoid future disputes.
V.Mahadevan (Expert) 13 February 2011
Though Registration of WILL is not mandatory, it provides strong evidence that proper parties appeared before the competent authority and the latter had attested the WILL after duly ascertaining the identity.
In certain towns, it is necessay to obtain a probate of a WILL in case of immovable property.
