Yes, whosoever is a SC/ST irrespective of the religion professed by him/her is protected by the provisions of the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

When he is converted into other caste, he looses his original caste, so he is not protected by the SC/ST act

I differ with the view of Mr Rajeev, in my opinion Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution converted in Buddhism but his status was the same. Because of his conversion he did not lose his SC status.

I am sorry to differ with Vishal's analogy which is not correct.
Scheduled castes are declared as such by President of India under Art 341 of Constitution of India. Further The Act applies to those who are declared as such under the Act, which states that “Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes” shall have the mean-ings assigned to them respectively under clause (24) and clause (25) of article 366 of the Constitution.
Scheduled castes are categorised as such depending upon the castes which we can see only in in Hindu religion. Hence people from other religions, where castes are not there could not be categorised as scheduled castes.
As far as buddists are concerned, neo buddists (converted from other religions) are declared as scheduled castes.

In reply to Vishal's answer. It is right Amedakar is converted but after conversion he became buddisht, he was not a SC.

One person could not change his caste by himself .But he can embrace any religion. Certain caste characterized under SC /ST is for the upliftment .If a person is converted from Hindu to any other religion she /he is losing SC/ST benefits but continue to the same caste only.
