Sending a message may not be an offence, but the contents of the message may contain some offensive material.
so, depends upon what you send in message.
Be careful while writing your messages and comments.

So you are sending a message on facebook which is readable by all. Further the contents are such that the friend is offended. It is the text of the message which can indicate that under which sections you can be booked.

Do not send such messages .
You will invite trouble, without any gain.
Go for positive attitude.
Face bk is Public Platform : no offensive msg pl.

Depends upon the contents of the message. However, subject to the nature and legality of contents of the message, if both of you are a duly approved friend with him at facebook, you have committed no offence otherwise, unless he removes you from the list of friends.

Dear Kavita,
MSG with offending language, even if dropped in inbox is not immune from operation of law of the land. MSG can be used as evidence of insult inflicted on the person.
