Suicidal wife and husband's duties

(Querist) 26 April 2014 This query is : Resolved
Dear Sir/madam,

I am a Hindu boy married for 3.5 years with a 2 year old kid. Our relationship has shattered due to various reasons. My wife is suffering from Personality disorder (she has been referred to a psychiatrist by her father). She has been prescribed Lithium. She has once attempted suicide with intentional Lithium-Paroxetene overdose. Now the doctor insists that I dispense one tablet to her everyday and safely keep the tablets away from her. As a husband, is it my duty to comply with this request? (My wife can still get the medication from outside and consume an overdose, and I might be in big trouble). Can I turn down the request to keep the tablets?

Your query is not clear to me.

To discharge marital obligations is primary duty of the spouse. It is common requests of the Doctor as you being the elder member in the house should take care of the other members.

@devajyoti: Sir, to make it clear, if my wife wants to frame me, and since she has suicidal tendancy also, she can get the tablets from outside and take overdose and then say that I gave her the overdose. I will be in trouble if I have accepted the responsibility of giving her the tablets. So my question is can I tell this to the doctor?May be her can take up the responsibility of giving her the tablets.

Comply the instructions from doctor and hope all would be fine and she would recover. Sometime calculated risk has to be taken.

Don't try to go by mere presumptions and vague theories about what has not happened. Responsibility of husband cannot be overruled, if wife tries to make suicide. Every one can doubt the intentions of the husband. Better try to understand your wife, why she is suicidal and get her treated appropriately through a psychiatrist. You must be cautious that she does not get consultation from any doctor in your absence.

I have nothing to add more except what i HAVE ALREADY REPLIED.
T. Kalaiselvan, Advocate (Expert) 30 April 2014
The experts have very properly opined about the author's case hence nothing more to add except to say that preserve the records of her previous suicidal attempt and the doctor's present prescription and his opinion related to her mental health.
