Telecom retail store is a trade or service sector

(Querist) 29 November 2012 This query is : Resolved
Under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Program (PMEGP- http://www.kvic.org.in/PDF/PMEGPscheme.pdf) a subsidy is available only for Manufacturing Sector and service sector.More information is provided in the link proviced above.

I am looking at taking up a franchise of a Vodafone retail outlet where we provide customers with Post paid and Prepaid connections, recharge, bill payment etc. Will this come under the service sector? Telecom as such is a service industry.

I went to the Manager at the District Industries Centre(DIC) so that i could apply for the PMEGP subsidy scheme. But he refused to take my application saying that it comes under trade.

Now if it is a service sector how can I tell him that it comes under the service sector and convince him to let me apply for the same?

Every paid service is also a trade. Generally trade includes something purchase and sale in the same manner without adding anything whereas in service field, mind is applied instead of sale and purchase of commodity. Your proposed field definitely do come within the ambit of service sector as you shall recharge connections, shall receive bill payments etc.

Hi Raj Kumar,

Thank You so much. So I am eligible for the subsidy. Any input on how I can handle the manager at the DIC and convince him to accept my application.

service sector primarily consists of truck transportation, messenger services and warehousing; information sector services; securities, commodities and other financial investment services; rental and leasing services; professional, scientific and technical services; administrative and support services; waste management and remediation; health care and social assistance; and arts, entertainment and recreation services.

There are several classification lists that may be used for the purpose of negotiating trade in services. The most common, however, is the one developed by the WTO in GATS w/120 which sets out 155 service sub-sectors in 12 broad sectoral categories. The categories in this list are based on an aggregated version of the United Nations Commodity Product Classification List (CPC). The list can be found at the WTO website under the references “Trade Topics – Services” http://www.wto.org
