What is the time limit to destroy the police station records

Dear Sir
i gave the compliant of kidnap on 12/04/2004 , i Don't no whether it is see miss of FIR .... at present i want that compliant of that case. but police authority defending they destroyed all records of that year. just i want to know two things 1. what is the time limit to destroy police records? 2.in which book can i get that information 3. by chance if i didn't get that information what is the next step to get that complaint copy

If FIR was not lodged then the police is required to maintain the non-cognizable complaint only up to one year and if the same was cognizable and was entered in daily diary then its life may vary from State to State police rules but it cannot be thought to be kept for more than 5 years.

Nothing can be commented about the source from where you shall obtain the copy of the alleged complaint made in the year 2004 of which subsequent fate is not known to you.
