Indore:
They branded her a eunuch and thought the shame and torture would be enough for Sarita (name changed) to return home for good. But they had not expected that the coy twenty-year-old would choose to wear pants instead and prove her womanhood... twice.
Sarita was married to Rajnarayan Shukla, resident of Shivrajpur village in Rewa district, on June 17 and on June 19 her husband branded her a eunuch. But when her in-laws also joined the chorus, the heartbroken bride decided to undergo the humiliation of a medical examination and set the record straight.
The woman alleged that this was an attempt on her husband and in-laws' behalf to force her to get more dowry from her parents. She added that the family wanted to get rid of her after extorting money and marry Rajnarayan to someone else.
Resisting their attempts to blackmail her, she rushed to a private doctor for a complete check-up and got a medical certificate confirming that she was a full grown up woman capable of bearing a child.
Simultaneously she also decided to teach a lesson to the greedy husband and in-laws. She approached the Mahila Thana and lodged an FIR against her husband and in-laws for harassing her for dowry after relating her ordeal.
Her fight, however, was far from over. Hearing the absurd allegations made against the woman, the police, too, did not believe her and did not register an FIR. Instead, they chose to believe the lies spread by her husband and in-laws. Pushed to an edge, Sarita had to get her medical certificate reconfirmed from the same doctor, this time in the presence of the police and her mother-in-law.
Realising that their lie has been exposed and they would soon face the music, Rajnarayan's family agreed to take Sarita home, but she has decided not to go.
The police have booked her husband and in-laws under relevant sections for dowry and harassment.
