Yes it is permissble. But the non production of original should be explained to the court and the court on being satisfied about the reason for non production of the original, can admit the certified copy as a exhibit. You can refer Indian Evidence Act.

Not any document, but the document pertaining to the witness and relevant and who was concealing this fact from the court.You may get the signature confirmed and questions asked about the contents of that document, and yet court does not exhibit it,follow the procedure to prove by calling the department.
