Society monthly maintenance charges

My residential building in Mumbai will shortly be going in for re-development. This will take approx. 2 years. All occupants will have to shift to alternative accommodation during this period.
The society Chairman has said that the existing members will have to continue paying the monthly maintenance charges during the re-development period.
Is this allowed. Can the Chairman force us to pay. Most members are opposed to paying the maintenance charges during the re-development period. Can the members challenge this decision of the Chairman.

What is the need of maintenance during the redevelopment?
But, the society may need money for running their office, even in the absence of maintenance. So, you may pay a portion of your regular maintenance.
