defamation is both civil as well as criminal wrong
there is different procedure and different court in both cases. Criminal court cannot grant civil relief.

Under criminal law the defamation will be a private complaint seeking to punish the offenders for the alleged offence hence there is no provision for compensation or damages claim, after the verdict in your favor, based on the confirmation you may go ahead with a defamation suit claiming compensation or damages money.

In a defamation u/s 499/500 IPC case if the accused is held guilty, shall be punished, but no compensation can be granted/levied. In a Suit for damages compensation can be granted to plaintiff. Respectfully I disagree with the expert Sh. V R Shroff ji, as it is not useless to file defamation suit/complaint, which is very effective, if it is persued vigorously to prove the averments.

Sec.499/500 IPC relates to criminal libel. Therefore question of Financial compensation does not arise, whereas Civil Suit for defamation prescribes and impose that facility.
