How many electricity meters for 2 different flats combined together?

(Querist) 23 December 2011 This query is : Resolved
We purchased two 1BHK flats from the builder.

Both flats are registered on different names (one flat on husbands name & other flat on wife's name).

Builder combined both flats & made it one single flat, however power consumption for each of the flats is distributed on the respective electricity meter as we pay 2 different bills for 2 flats.

Recently Electricity officials during their routine visit pointed that we cannot use 2 single phase electricity meters since 2 flats have been combined together & ideally we should have 1 single electricity meter.

Please suggest what does the law say & help us what we should do as 2 electricity meters have been provided by the builder & we have not done anything?

Electricity officials were telling us that we need to pay penalty for having 2 electricity meters when we have combined both the flats?

Please suggest.

you ought to have 2 separate doors for the 2 flats while combining the flats internally .

as per records you have 2 flats , 2 separate agreement with builder , 2 separte maintenance bills are being raisedby the society . in addition flats are standing in 2 different names .

if its possible have another additional door built from outside

aggree with Sethisab . there r 2 flats as per the agreement and their legal identity will be same, 2 seperate flats. your electricity meters r in the name of u n ur wife so u r both seperate consumers of the ele company. legtally you can have 2 meters and the compay cannot penalise u for that. husband and wife are seperate legal identites when it comes to immovable property.

The observation of electricity board officials is accurate. Either you shall have to show two units at entry or shall have to disconnect one. The penalty can be waived off if you cite clear position in your application.
