A govt employee can not run a business or hold another office of profit as long as his existing employment is continuing.

I do agree with Mr.Barman reg govt.employee.
In respect of employees working in the autonomous bodies, it depends upon the conduct rules framed in that particular body.

As per the LIC rules, not only the Govt employee, but his wife and certain relatives can not become an agent.

A Government employee cannot be an LIC Agent.
As regards the employee of any autonomous body, one has to find out from the Body, whether he can become a LIC Agent or not. Only after getting clearance one can become an agent otherwise not.

Dear Manjeet,
No business and profession can be undertaken by a Government employee. Becoming agent of LIC would be treated as a misconduct on the part of the employee under the respective conduct rules. However, there is no ban on any member of the family of the Government servant to adopt any business and profession, including becoming an agent of the LIC. BUT, the employee will have to give due intimation to his department about the nature of business undertaken by his family member, as per the provisions of the conduct rules.
About autonomous body, that depends upon specification in the conduct rules of the concerned autonomous body. However, almost all the autonomous bodies craft their rules on the analogy of the Government rules.
