Mortgage deed not returned

i had mortgaged a property with ramlal bankers(pawnbroker & moneylender).inspite of clearing loans he has just given a dischrge receipt @ subregistrar.when i asked for the simple mortgage deed executed before,he tells that this deed stays with him as he has executed the discharge @ sub registrar & i need not worry.
what should i do to get the mortgage deed back?

If the mortgage is cancelled at the Sub Registrar office and the same is exhibited in the encumbrance certificate,it will be the conclusive proof that the motrgage has been cancelled.

The money lender is rigt in his approach. Confirm from the record of the registrar whether the redemption of mortgage has been entered thereto or not and if not then get it recorded.
