laptop was lost as you were assaulted by 4 men . it is not your fault . it was not lost due to your negligence . ideally company should not ask you to pay 50%of amount .

if you want to continue working in the organisation pay 50%amount . if you have got better prospects leave the organisation

If it is not insured your Share of 50% is reasonable. You could request for deduction in installment and mean time you could see the result of FIR filed and you could request your company for 50% after depreciations

You may agree for Co Pay.

Don't carry company assets outside the office.
Let someone take charge of it and issue acknowledgment in office.

Has the company ever circulated any policy on 50% to be paid in case of theft/loss etc...........?

As pointed out by Expert Mehar, if the assets are insured then company should not ask you to pay. If the amounts paid by Insurance Company is equal to or more than the depreciated value then company should not ask you to pay.

If you are aware that it is insured then apply your resources and find out how much company has received from insurance and request to refund you (if at all you pay). ........... The company need to show all amounts in its books so ideally it should not conceal or lie about it.

By what time you had come out of office and why were you not off the road by 10.30p.m.........................and why were you carrying Laptop at that hour.............these are some of the questions you can expect from your line managers/HR etc.................

On your own inform the manufacturer also in writing with a copy to you.

There must be some software/technology to track the stolen/snatched Laptop.

If you want to continue to work pay the demanded share to company.

Follow up the Fir lodged.

Security and safety of company's assets in your posession was your own liability. So, if the company is not ready to write off the cost of the laptop, it is your liability to pay the cost of lost laptop. Rather, you should be thankful to the company management that they are asking you to reimburse only 50% of the cost of the lost laptop.

However, later if the police is able to recover the lost item, you can claim refund of part of the cost deposited by you.
