In all my documents my name is karthik. for applying passport is surname compulsory. if so how to add surname.

You give your name what is available in your documents, do not indulge in any smart activity by adding any other name just to add surname.
If there is no surname attached to your name then there is no necessity for you to add surname to your name as suffix.

From the beginning of your studies if you/your parents did not mention your surname anywhere now there is no necessity to add a surname. You may consult the passport authorities.

If a your name is registered as just "Karthik" in all records, including the birth certificate, school/college records, voter ID, ration card, and Aadhaar card, you can still apply for a passport. Here's what you can do:
1. Use Existing Name: You can apply for the passport using the name "Karthik" as it appears in all your official documents. The passport authorities will accept the name as it is provided it matches all other identity documents.
2. Affidavit: If required by Passport Authorities, you may have to submit an affidavit stating that you do not have a surname and that "Karthik" is your full name.
3. Supporting Documents: All supporting documents submitted for the passport application should have the name "Karthik" consistently.

You cannot add surname for the purpose of issuance of passport till it is published in gazzete.
