Mr. Ramachandran,
If you are in politics, why you think about Government job. In today's environments, political career is much better than a Government job. So, why not be a part of the Government rather than being a servant in Government? Even criminals seem to be becoming part of the Government without any restriction or police verification, while a candidate for even the lowest job of a peon in Government has to undergo police verification before his appointment and gets rejected if adverse report is received.

Not eligible. A Govt employee can be thrown out if joined any party while in service.

Mr. Ramachandran,
I tend to differ with the views of Shri Sudhir Kumar, as he said, "not eligible". The advice of Shri Sudhir Kumar is relevant only to the Government employees, who are already in service, not for applicants for job, as the relevant conduct rule states--
"No Government servant shall be a member of, or be otherwise associated with, any political party or any organisation which takes part in politics nor shall he take part in, subscribe in aid of, or assist in any other manner, any political movement or activity .. AFTER ENTERING in to Government service, he should not remain as a member of any political party."
I further differ with his view, i.e., "A Govt employee can be thrown out if joined any party while in service." Rules nowhere confirm that he would necessarily be thrown out (removal/ termination or dismissal) from service. Of course, the employee can be charge sheeted for his being a member or participation in political activities and be punished with any one out of ten prescribed penalties, as the disciplinary authority may think fit, but not necessarily only with removal or dismissal from service.
Punishment of removal or dismissal from service is in rarest of the rare case, as taking part by Government servant is not a crime of moral turpitute, but is considered as an indiscipline while in service.

Agreeing with Mr Dhingra I will just add that
It is forbidden for someone existing member of a political party to be appointed as Govt servant.
It is forbidden for a person appointed to govt post to join a political party.
