You have not mentioned, how your absence has been treated for the period from Dec. 2010 to April 2011 by the company?

However, I observe that it is your student's academic query, not as an employee of the company.

You are welcome.
You can't assume the period of absence as leave unless leave is formally sanctioned.
Raj Kumar Makkad (Expert) 01 July 2013
The absence of 5 months is required to be specifically dealt with a specific order otherwise it shall be treated as break in service and in that event, you are not entitled for the gratuity.
