Hindu law prohibits marriages between parties who are having 'sapinda relationship', that is three degrees from mother's side or seven degrees from father's side, as agnates or cognates or having a common ancestor.
But, there is exemption : In communities, providing for marriages, even within the 'prohibited relationship', if the practice is times immemorial, then prohibition will not apply.
