how to read legal citation?

please help on how to read a case law citation. What does the specifications means in any legal case citation.

Read the judgemenet from given citation carefully, Understand the case from its facts and the legal provisions applicable to such facts. Then the exisiting case laws applied to support the case. The cases will speack precedents and ratio. Then read the final outcome. Any more problem? Its very easy. concentrate on it.

I need to refine my query
In any case law citation there are numbers like for eg.. CIT v. Seshasayee Paper & Boards Ltd. [2000] 108 Taxman 464/242 ITR 490 (Mad.). What does thease numbers suggest?

2000 means the year. 108 means serial no of journal published in the year 2000 and 464 means the page no./ 242 ITR means the serial no of the journal and 490 means the page no and (Mad) means the Madras High court
